Snow and frost: tips for Sheffield gardeners

Scape Easy Landscaping Services Sheffield

Snow and frost look lovely on your lawn, don’t they? But that white covering inevitably comes with its challenges for Sheffield gardeners.

Cold temperatures, frozen ground and prolonged damp conditions can all affect plants, lawns and garden structures. But with the right approach, it’s possible to protect your garden through icy weather and reduce the risk of lasting damage once conditions improve.

One of the most important considerations during snow and ice is avoiding unnecessary disturbance. Walking on frozen or heavily frosted lawns can bruise grass blades and compact the soil, leading to bare patches in spring. Where possible, keep foot traffic to paths and hard surfaces, and avoid moving heavy pots or furniture across icy ground.

Snow itself can be both helpful and harmful. A light covering can act as insulation for plants, protecting roots from extreme cold. However, heavy snow settling on shrubs, hedges or conifers can cause branches to bend or snap. Gently brushing excess snow away with a soft broom helps relieve the weight without damaging the plant. It’s best to do this carefully, avoiding sudden movements that could cause breakage.

Potted plants are particularly vulnerable during freezing conditions. Containers can crack, and roots are more exposed to cold than those in the ground. Raising pots slightly off the soil allows excess water to drain away and reduces the risk of freezing. Moving them closer to walls, fences or sheltered corners can also provide extra protection. Wrapping pots with fleece or bubble wrap helps insulate roots during prolonged cold spells.

Icy surfaces pose a safety risk as well. Paths, steps and patios can become dangerously slippery, so regular clearing is important. Using grit, sand or non-corrosive ice melt products can improve traction without harming nearby plants. Rock salt should be avoided where possible, as it can damage soil and vegetation when it washes away. And finally, garden structures should be checked after periods of severe weather. Fences, trellises and sheds can loosen or shift due to frozen ground and strong winds. Catching small issues early helps prevent more extensive repairs later on.

Once temperatures rise, it’s best to let plants recover naturally rather than rushing in with pruning or tidying. Frost-damaged growth often looks worse than it is, and cutting back too early can expose healthy tissue to further cold. Patience and gentle care are key to helping your garden come through winter in good condition.
